A Surprisingly Busy Week

So last weekend was supposed to be work, but that’s got moved back to this weekend instead. Desperately need some funds!

Proper winter weather has finally hit us. After enjoying double digit temperatures until just over a week ago, we were plunged into sub-zero since middle of this week. I remembered how much I hate driving on icy roads and that was made particularly clear yesterday when I fishtailed going around a corner. All fine, I recovered quickly, but it was scary enough that husband had to take over.

School has been business as usual, though I was annoyed when the office at eldest’s called me at 3:50pm on Thursday (five minutes after school ends) to inform me that Further Maths class was cancelled and could I please pickup now. They know I live 30 minutes away, so eldest had to sit and wait in the freezing cold and dark until husband got there. Luckily, one of his friends stayed with him so he wasn’t alone.

Placed the order for his final school photos. I’ll be glad not to have to do that ever again – over FIFTY quid for five flippin’ photos. The postage alone was £8! Daylight robbery!

Youngest has had a slightly mixed bag this week. One incident where he had a (brief but spectacular) fallout with his closest friend, resulting in a call from the inclusion support officer that evening. However, he’s had a good week otherwise and the crowning glory was parents evening, where all the teachers told us how impressed they are with his progress and attitude to learning. I was especially pleased to hear the maths teacher is keeping him challenged with work 2 years above his year group. He’s also been doing GCSE papers for fun – considering he’s only 11, I never failed to be stunned.

We nearly hit a deer on the way back from parents evening. Amusingly, husband announced literally seconds beforehand that he must drive extra careful, this is deer country. Cue two fallow deciding to leg it across the road, with only the briefest glimpse of eye shine to warn us. Night driving is not fun!

I decided I was going to investigate a new note-taking app. I’ve been using Bear for a while, and though it is lovely, I wanted to see if I could save some money with a cheaper sub. After a couple of days of research and testing, I found an app I liked more called Craft and promptly switched. Only thing is, it’s actually more expensive! Oh well.

Yesterday was very busy and didn’t go quite as well as expected. Eldest is intending to do A-Level Drama at college, so I’d booked tickets to see their production of The Addams Family and give him a feel of what he’d be doing. We had a good amount of time to eat dinner after school, and got to the college in plenty of time. Despite the fact he didn’t need to engage with anyone and I’d booked seats right at the back, eldest had one of his non-verbal anxiety episodes and barely said anything the whole time, clearly looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. Youngest enjoyed it for all of 20 minutes and then started fidgeting, talking, and eventually crying because he was tired. The show was a little over 2 hours long, plus interval, so by the end of it we were all a bit cranky.

Saying all that, we all agreed it was a very good performance. The songs were catchy, the dialogue was clear and the actors played their parts with great enthusiasm. A huge credit to the 16/17 year olds who performed over 3 consecutive evenings, they must have been exhausted!

Today I’ve felt like I’ve got a hangover, despite no alcohol being involved. It’s made me quite grumpy and I ended up having a meltdown this evening when we tried to order a takeaway (to celebrate eldest finishing another round of mocks) and it failed but took the money anyway. All sorted quickly, but didn’t need the stress!

So that’s my week. Despite feeling like I’ve not done or achieved anything, apparently I’ve written a small novel. I’ll leave you with a photo from the show. Quality not the best due to lighting.
